Breastfeeding at Work – Tips for the Working Mother

Breastfeeding has been around since the dawn of time. Long before grocery stores and formula it was the only method for feeding our babies, but times have changed! People, especially women, have evolved! Women take on so many roles in today’s society it’s hard to believe that we are still made to feel uncomfortable doing something so natural. Additionally, many women are working outside of the home and trying to breastfeed their babies. Although juggling work and breastfeeding is hard, we want to encourage mothers to stay positive and offer these few tips that will make it a little easier.


  1. Stay positive! A good sense of humor and positive attitude are necessary during this time. There will be embarrassing moments such as leaking, and possibly co-workers whom aren’t supportive. Stay strong and remember that this is all worth it!
  2. Choose wisely – Try to choose a care provider that is both close to your work place and breastfeeding friendly.  Having your provider close or even on-site will allow you to nurse a couple of times and reduce the times you have to pump.
  3. Pump Power – Buy a good breast pump.  Make sure that you choose the best pump for you.  This is not an item to want to be frugal with.  You will be using it daily.
  4. Communicate – Trying to hide your breastfeeding at work will not make things easier.  Let you employer know what your plans are. They can help to adjust lunch and break times around needed pumps and provide a safe and comfortable place to do it.
  5. Stay organized – Having all of your supplies available will make it easier to stay consistent. Running out of the house your first day back is already going to be a stressful time. Make sure that you have already visited and dropped of your baby at your care provider at least once before this day.  Also be sure that you have your car packed with extra supplies just in case you run out. Bring an extra lunch box for the community fridge.  You can store your milk in there and have an easy way to tote it to and from work.

Just remember that your baby’s health is worth the extra trouble you are going through. At first it will be an adjustment, but you will get in the swing of things in no time.

Food Friday – Easy Shepard’s Pie

Easy Shepard’s Pie recipe:

If you need a quick and easy dinner or you are looking for another dish to freeze, this is a great recipe to have.  Here is what you’ll need:







1 lb. ground beef

1 can tomato soup

1 can corn (can also use peas, green beans etc. use your leftovers)

1 box instant mashed potatoes (can also make from scratch or use leftovers)

¾ up grated cheese (give or take)

Season to taste. (Salt, pepper, garlic salt)


  1. Brown ground beef and drain fat
  2. Add can of tomato soup, corn and seasonings
  3. In separate pot, make mashed potatoes according to recipe on box
  4. Pour meat mixture into round casserole dish
  5. Top with mashed potatoes
  6. Cover with cheese
  7. Bake at 350 for 15 mins.

If freezing, just cover with foil and freeze. Move casserole dish to fridge the day of your dinner. Bake at 375 for 50-60 mins. Or until center is hot.

Thrifty Thursday – Saving Money on Groceries



Everyone is living on a budget these days. The cost of living is high because of steadily growing gas and food prices. Although it’s hard to do anything about gas prices, you can do something to save on your grocery bills. Studies show that Americans throw away nearly half the food they buy. WOW! So before you go grocery shopping, take a look in the cupboards and find items ready to expire.  Try to build your menu around these items to prevent waste and save you some money on items you would have to buy to replace them. Saving money at the store is just half the battle. A lot of our food gets thrown away after preparation. Now I know that not everyone likes leftovers, but here are a few ways to turn your leftovers into new dishes.

  1. Save even the smallest amount of leftover veggies for soups, omelets or shepherds pie.
  2. Save all of your meat juices. Store them in ice cube trays or Ziploc bags in the freezer and you have a great stock for later.
  3. If you have leftover bread or rolls, freeze it!!! A few leftover nights will create enough rolls for a new meal.  Warm and display with oil and balsamic for a great restaurant breadbasket feel.
  4. Slice and save leftover chicken and steak in the freezer.  Make fajitas once you have enough for the family.  (Quesadillas will also work)
  5. Save leftover rice.  You can add and egg and soy sauce for fried rice.  The rice can also be used on soup and shepherds pie

Tip Tuesday



Tired of your dirty microwave? We’ve got a simple solution for you. Boil water for 5 to 10 minutes in a dirty microwave, and it will all wipe clean. Put slices of lemon, lime or orange in the water to give your microwave a fresh, clean smell.

Well we all have, and often times we give up hope on ever making that mystery spot go away.  Before you give up hope, we have a new product you should try.

Grandmas Secret Spot Remover!  You won’t find this in your grocery store. Most times it is found at fabric shops like Hancock fabric and Joann’s.  We found ours at Hobby Lobby. You can also purchase it online at Amazon.  Many items of clothing have been saved with this secret spot remover. It may not remove every spot, but it has worked for some suborn stuff. So give it a try and you might be able to bring back your favorite shirt.

Got the Monday Blues??? Well Ready This!



Do you have a case of the “Mondays”? Well join the rest of society. Disliking Mondays is not only common; it’s got some scientific backing. People will spend 34 minutes complain today compared to 22 minutes other days. Many people don’t even crack a smile until after 11am on Mondays! And to top it all off, most people only get 3 1/5 hours of productive work in on Mondays.

So why do people hate Mondays? Well on top of the fact that it’s the first day of the workweek, most of the time sleep plays a part in the issue.  Often times we try to squeeze a lot in to our weekends.  We do yard work, projects and stay up far to late.  Changing our sleep schedule makes it very difficult to get up and adds to fatigue….especially on Monday morning. Changing our eating habits also makes a difference. Over eating or over drinking will play a part in how you feel and your energy levels come Monday morning.

The best way to have a great Monday is to try and get some needed rest over the weekend! Be sure to continue with your exercise routine and eating habits. Another great way to make your Monday and the rest of your week go smoothly is to spend the first part of Monday creating a plan for the week. Often times people are depressed on Mondays thinking about all the things they need to get done that week.  Designating small goals and tasks each day will prevent you from getting overwhelmed and keep you motivated daily.  Remember to leave a little extra time in each day to allow for projects that take longer than planned or for that extra task your boss throws in last minute.

Another way to keep Mondays exciting is to create something to look forward to. People usually take their lunch each day and go out to lunch on Fridays. Try reversing that and make Monday the day you treat yourself to lunch.  It will also give you a little extra time to get ready Monday morning.

Remember, it’s all about your attitude.  Starting the week off with a positive attitude will help your Monday and the rest of your week to be productive and go smoothly! So smile….before 11am  :)

Food Friday – Baby It’s Cold Outside!!


Unless you’re lucky enough to live in one of the beautiful sates of Florida or California, most everywhere is cold right now.  For the rest of us…let’s get warm! On cold days we love getting the crock-pot out and making some great soups that warm the home and smell great.  Todays recipe if for Taco Soup!






1 onion, chopped

1 (16 ounce) can chili beans

1 (15 ounce) can black beans

1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce

1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle beer

2 (10 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with green chilies, undrained

1 (1.25 ounce) package taco seasoning

3 whole skinless, boneless chicken breasts

shredded Cheddar cheese (optional)

sour cream (optional)

crushed tortilla chips (optional)



1. Place the onion, chili beans, black beans, corn, tomato sauce, beer, and diced tomatoes in a slow cooker. Add taco seasoning, and stir to blend. Lay chicken breasts on top of the mixture, pressing down slightly until just covered by the other ingredients. Set slow cooker for low heat, cover, and cook for 5 hours.

2. Remove chicken breasts from the soup, and allow to cool long enough to be handled. Stir the shredded chicken back into the soup, and continue cooking for 2 hours. Serve topped with shredded Cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and crushed tortilla chips, if desired.
